All things long to persist in their being
Ben Butler
18 September - 8 December 2006
Consisting of a series of "timber frame" forms that are identical except for their scale, the structure employs traditional wood joinery that incrementally diminishes in size from one to the next in the grid. Each step down in scale corresponds to a slight turn, causing the structure to spiral inward while visually expanding out into the surrounding architecture. With clarity in the physical construction, the piece encourages attention to be paid to the spaces in between. Butler's version of an architectural nautilus shell fills the gallery space, measuring 10' x 25' x 35'.
A resident of Quogue, New York, Ben Butler received his B.A. from Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine and his M.F.A. in Sculpture from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His installation work has been shown in Chicago, New York City, and several locations in Maine.
